What is a Physical Therapist?

A physical therapist (PT), or a doctor of physical therapy (DPT), is a licensed healthcare professional who specializes in diagnosing, treating, and helping patients improve their physical movement and function. Essentially, physical therapists are movement experts who use evidence-based methods to help patients regain function, manage pain, and improve quality of life through personalized care and rehabilitation.

Our PTs work with individuals of all ages who have medical problems, injuries, or disabilities that limit their ability to move or perform daily activities. Working together with you, a Moriarty physical therapist will develop a customized treatment plan that may include exercises, hands-on therapy, like medical massage, specialized equipment, and education to help you reduce pain, restore mobility, and prevent further injury or disability.

Moriarty physical therapists help patients:

  • Recover from injuries
  • Manage chronic conditions
  • Avoid surgery
  • Avoid prescription drugs
  • Improve overall physical fitness

We can also work in collaboration with other healthcare providers. However, with the Direct Access insurance program, that is not required in order to receive treatment. We help treat conditions related to the musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiopulmonary, and other body systems.

What types of exam questions will my physical therapist ask me during the initial evaluation?

Here is a high-level overview of what to expect in terms of types of questions asked during your initial evaluation period. Your physical therapist will work through a structured process that includes several key steps, however, your evaluation may vary based on your particular case.

Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) consulting with a Cary NC patientPatient Interview and Medical History

Your assessment begins with a detailed interview where your physical therapist will ask you about current symptoms, how and when they started, your previous level of function, and how your condition affects your daily life. The therapist also reviews your medical history with you, including past injuries, surgeries, medications, and any relevant diagnostic reports or imaging.

Physical Examination

Your therapist conducts a physical examination to evaluate posture, gait (how you walk), body alignment, and the physical condition of your muscles and joints (looking for tenderness, swelling, or abnormalities).

Your range of motion, strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and functional mobility will be assessed through specific tests and movements.

Special tests may be performed to identify specific injuries or conditions, such as ligament injuries or nerve compression.

Functional Assessment

Your physical therapist will observe how you perform daily activities like walking, climbing stairs, or lifting objects to identify any limitations or compensations.

They may use pain scales to quantify your discomfort and ask you to rate your pain during different activities.

Review of Other Relevant Documentation

Any available imaging (X-rays, MRIs) or reports from other healthcare providers are reviewed to inform the assessment and guide treatment.

Diagnosis and Goal Setting

Based on the findings, your Moriarty therapist establishes a diagnosis and discusses short- and long-term goals with you.

They determine the severity of your symptoms to guide the development of your treatment plan. In some cases, more testing may be needed before treatment can be determined.

Development of a Treatment Plan

A personalized treatment plan is created, which may include therapeutic exercises, manual therapy, modalities like electrical stimulation, and a home exercise program.

The plan is discussed with you, and your feedback is encouraged to ensure the approach aligns with your goals and needs.

Ongoing Communication

Your Moriarty therapist continuously monitors your progress and adjusts the treatment plan as needed, based on your response and feedback.

This comprehensive assessment ensures that your physical therapy is individualized and targeted to help you achieve optimal function and recovery.
