Mobility Minute: Overcome Obesity With Exercise

Obesity affects people of all ages, races and socioeconomic levels. More than 1 in 3 adults were considered to be overweight. Being overweight increases your chance of illness and early death. The past two decades have seen an alarming increase in obesity. It is now a worldwide epidemic.
Genetic, environmental, behavioral, social, physiological, and cultural factors can contribute to obesity. Consumption of caloric unhealthy foods are contributing factors to obesity. An imbalance between caloric intake and energy expenditure leads to obesity.
Being overweight contributes to many chronic diseases and can end your life early. Excess body weight impacts all areas of your body contributing to joint pain. Added weight places increased stress on joints, muscles, and spinal discs. People often experience diminished motor “function” making simple daily activities difficult.
Manage weight and prevent obesity later in life. Aerobic exercise and strength training are the keys to weight loss and weight control.
Physical therapists will identify underlying reasons for unhealthy behaviors to:
Reduce pain. Exercise is integral to almost all forms of back and neck pain treatment.
Improve cardiovascular fitness. Aerobic exercise elevates your body’s metabolism and burn more calories.
Improve strength. Exercises address any muscle weakness or to improve muscle strength.
Improve movement. Restoring posture help make activities easier and less painful, and even improve breathing.
Increase activity levels. Address individual needs to achieve goals in the safest, fastest, and most effective way.
Work with a physical therapist to design an individualized treatment program. Follow the special instructions about your specific health conditions.
