Chronic Knee Pain Can Be Debilitating: Choose Physical Therapy For Pain Relief

In most cases, there is no lasting pain relief or improved function in most knee arthritis and meniscal tear cases — (Tufts Medical Center, May 2017).
Instead of undergoing a surgical procedure opt for several weeks of physical therapy. The pain will have diminished and your can get back out there and get back to playing tennis or cycling.
As we age, the likelihood of experiencing pain from degenerative knee disease increases. Chronic knee pain can be debilitating, it’s difficult to take away any option that may abate the pain.
Steroid injections into the knee to help reduce inflammation. Repeated use of steroids can speed the development of arthritis in the joint.
If the pain continues, surgery may be advisable to repair torn ligaments or damage caused by severe trauma. Arthroscopic surgery may be helpful to repair joint movement from meniscus tears.
Follow this advice before undergoing the knife in the operating room:
  • If you are overweight, lose weight. The more pressure on your knees, the more likelihood of knee tears and pain.
  • Avoid non essential activities that aggravate knee pain like squatting or sitting too long in one place.
  • For acute pain, take an over-the-counter pain reliever.
  • Schedule an exploratory visit with a physical therapist who specializes in knee pain.
Talk to your doctor. Consult several physicians to weigh all options including surgery. Get treatment and start your recovery process immediately.
Physical therapy may be the best option.
