What to Expect During Your First Physical Therapy Session in Raleigh or Cary

Starting physical therapy for the first time can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re recovering from surgery, managing chronic pain, or seeking support after an injury, your first session is the beginning of a personalized journey toward better mobility and long-term wellness. At Moriarty Physical Therapy in Raleigh and Cary, our goal is to make you feel informed, empowered, and confident from the very beginning.

Before Your First Visit: How to Prepare

You don’t need a referral to begin physical therapy in North Carolina, which means you can schedule an appointment at your convenience. Once booked, you’ll receive paperwork that covers your medical history, current symptoms, and treatment goals. Be as thorough as possible; this helps your therapist design a plan that works specifically for you.

Tip: Wear comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement. You’ll likely be asked to perform simple mobility tests, and your therapist may need access to the injured area.

What Happens During the Initial Evaluation

Your first session is focused on understanding your body and identifying the root cause of your pain or limitation. Expect your physical therapist to:

  • Review your medical history and goals
  • Ask about your symptoms, lifestyle, and activities
  • Perform movement and strength assessments
  • Evaluate range of motion, flexibility, and posture

This one-on-one time allows your therapist to tailor a treatment plan specifically for you; there are no cookie-cutter protocols here.

Creating Your Personalized Care Plan

After the evaluation, your therapist will walk you through the recommended approach to care. This might include:

  • Manual therapy (hands-on treatment to improve joint and soft tissue function)
  • Therapeutic exercises
  • Education on posture, alignment, or ergonomics
  • Pain relief strategies (such as dry needling or cupping)
  • At-home exercises and expectations between sessions

Your care plan will evolve in tandem with your progress, and your feedback will be instrumental.

Common Questions About Your First Session

How long does the first appointment take?
Most first visits last 45–60 minutes, depending on your condition.

Will I start treatment on day one?
Yes! After the evaluation, many patients begin treatment right away.

How soon will I feel better?

Every case is unique, but many patients report improvements after even the first visit. The most important factor is consistency.

Schedule a FREE 15-minute Exploration Visit

Come visit one of our physical therapy clinics in New York or North Carolina and one of our Doctors of Physical Therapy will do a 15-minute consultation to see if physical therapy is right for you. In the consultation, we’ll help determine the source of pain and movement restrictions to see if you would benefit from physical therapy or might need the assistance of another healthcare professional. If so, we’ll make a referral and help speed up achieving your health goal.

You have nothing to lose; the screening is free! And if physical therapy could help you, we can perform the examination right then–even without a prescription–with Direct Access (covered by insurance).
